The TTJA

The Toots Thielemans Jazz Award is an initiative of the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel and is awarded to the most deserving student(s) from the jazz department. The conservatoire gives the winner a cash prize of 5,000 euros and offers him/her a concert. In this way, our institution wants to stimulate talented young jazz musicians to give the best of themselves and thus lay the foundations for a later career. It is the late Toots Thielemans who personally linked his name to this prize, which is due for its twelfth edition in 2022. The KCB warmly invites you to this celebration.

And the winner is

For this edition, the Toots Thielemans Award goes to Jasen Kalil Weaver, a young double bass player from New Orleans who obtained his master's degree at the KCB thanks to the Master Mind grant from the Flemish authorities. Before he came to study at the KCB, Jasen was already a bassist in great demand who had won his spurs with Jason Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, among others. On the 10th of May, he will play a set with his own work, performed by his international sextet.

Toots Thielemans Jazz Award | 12th edition KCB 2022

As part of the international symposium Toots Thielemans (1922-2016). A Century of Music across Europe and America (9 -11 May 2022), KBR and Bozar are joining forces with the two Brussels Conservatories of Music (KCB & CrB) to offer Toots 100 & Beyond, a premiere concert dedicated to the compositions of the author of Bluesette. An ensemble of young talented musicians from the two conservatories will perform a suite of pieces specifically composed for the occasion and based upon those of Toots.
