Nick Woud studied timpani and percussion at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam. In 1977 he was appointed timpanist /percussionist with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and was named principal timpanist four years later.
In 2003, after being a member of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra for twenty-five years, Woud was appointed Solo Timpanist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Nick Woud has taught at the Conservatories in Hilversum and Utrecht and returned to his alma mater, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, as Professor of Timpani in 1996. In addition to these activities, he served as Director of studies/coach with many youth orchestras, among them, the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands and the European Union Youth Orchestra.
He is in high demand as Tutor at percussion courses and symposia and gave masterclasses at Conservatoires and Universities in New York, Boston, Washington, Cleveland, Lausanne, Tokyo, Seoul, Oslo, San Sebastian, Saragossa, London, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Taipei, Valencia and many more important universities. Currently Nick Woud is also Professor of Timpani in the orchestral Masters program of the Conservatorio Arrigo Boito in Parma.
Nick Woud published three Timpani study books and a mallet book, which are being used worldwide.
As a composer, Nick Woud writes music for tv and radio, chamber music and works for symphony orchestra.
