Bertrand Gourdy

As a composer, Bertrand Gourdy is primarily interested in how an idea is transformed through the two filtering processes of performance and audience perception. To address this, he tries to work as closely as possible with performers, and explores various modes of collaborative creation.

Before studying composition with Martin Moulin in France, Bertrand studied percussion first at KCB (Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel), then at the Music Academy Basel with Christian Dierstein. He is currently working on a doctoral thesis at the University of Basel on the analysis of learning processes in music.

Parallel to his musical studies, Bertrand took time to study first literature, then graduated in history at the University of Rennes, before going to Leipzig for a year to study international relations and political history.

This Masterclass is co-organised by our percussion professors, Gert François & Bart Quartier.
