Nelson Veras

As of the academic year 2024-2025, the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel welcomes jazz guitarist Nelson Veras.

Born in 1977 in Brazil, Nelson Veras developed a unique style mixing classical guitar, contemporary jazz and his Brazilian roots. At the age of 14, he moved to France and immediately impressed with a performance with Pat Metheny. At 16, he formed his first band and performed at festivals such as Jazz in Marciac and the Nice Jazz Festival. He also played with prominent musicians such as Michel Petrucciani and Aldo Romano.

In 1998, Veras won the ‘Premio Visa of Brazilian Music’, and in 2001 he played with Lee Konitz and Gary Peacock in a tribute to Michel Petrucciani. His debut solo CD was released on Label Bleu in 2003, followed by collaborations with Steve Coleman's Five Elements and solo and trio recordings on Beejazz.

Veras has collaborated with an impressive list of artists, including Richard Galliano, Manu Katché, Tomasz Stanko, and Billy Cobham. He has given numerous workshops worldwide and was a teacher at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSM).
