The continuation of Béla Bartók’s music in jazz

In the first half of his masterclass, András Párniczky briefly summarizes the results of his research, which is based on his dissertation defended in 2022, with Summa Cum Laude at the Doctoral School of Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In the second half of the workshop, through musical examples, one can get to know the new paths opened up by the Bartók influence in the field of jazz improvisation. We examine melody-making techniques such as the "axis system" and „polymodal chromaticism”, as well as the nature of Bartók's rhythmicity either in 4/4 or in asymmetrical rhythms like 7/8 in practice.
The lecture was first heard in November 2022 at the MDW Academy of Music in Vienna, then in Hungarian in 2024 at the BMC Music Information Center and Library as well as at the Jazz Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. The dissertation is expected to be published in book format next year by L'Harmattan book publisher.

András Párniczky

Dr. András Párniczky – jazz guitarist, composer, professor
Since 1990, András Párniczky has performed at numerous festivals and prestigious jazz clubs in almost all European countries, as well as overseas in New York and Washington, while also role an important player in Hungarian jazz scene. He founded Nigun in 2001, with which he released five albums and appeared in two more. In 2016, he created the Párniczky Quartet with the aim to perform his adaptations of the works of Béla Bartók. Their first album, published by BMC, earned critical acclaim both in Hungary and internationally. The quartet is still active in concerts and ipublished theirs second album in 2023. Instead of the usual thematic pieces, the compositions move within a much freer framework, within while the band’s recognizable sound has remained, a self-identified sound, free of jazz clichés has been created.
