Niranjan Wijewickrema, Ph.D., Visiting Professor at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel.
Trumpeter and Musicologist Niranjan Wijewickrema obtained various degrees (Solfeggio, specialized Solfeggio, History of Music & Harmony) during his musical studies at the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and Mons.
He studied Trumpet with Pierre Thibaud (Paris) and Jerome Callet (New York) before gaining his trumpet degrees in the classes of Antoine Acquisto (IMEP, Namur) and Friedemann Immer (HfM, Köln).
His Ph.D. dissertation in Musicology (HfM, Karlsruhe) "Der Gebrauch der Trompete in den gedruckten Kantantenjahrgängen Georg Philipp Telemanns" was achieved under the supervison of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Edward Hankins Tarr (†) and received with the mention cum Laude.
He has been leading a free-lance trumpeter career across Europe (e.g.: second Brandenburg Concerto at the Ruhr-Klassik Festival, world première of Victor Kissine's Opéra Pompier) before focusing his interest on research an pedagogy.
He has taught Natural Trumpet both at the Académie de Musique de Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and the IMEP (Namur), and gave various master-classes (Bundesakademie für Kulturelle Bildung Wolfenbüttel, International Summer Academy Alden Bilzen).
He currently teaches Natural Trumpet at the HIPP Department of the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel; his class has over the years confirmed its status of career launch pad for top baroque trumpeters of the uprising generation, as for instance: Sander Kintaert or Bruno Fernandes (cf. videos below)
