Passaggi et affetti

This concert programme presents instrumental and mixed vocal-instrumental North Italian repertoire from the first half of the seventeenth century, performed on recorders in accordance with contemporary instrumentation practices.

Phd in the Arts: The Place of the Recorder in the Performance of Italian Music, c.1600-1690

Italian “Early Baroque” music has long captivated modern recorder players. But how significant was this instrument in the seventeenth century? What repertoire did it feature? Was it played by professionals, amateurs, or both? What sizes and types of recorders were used, and were there regional differences? These are the key questions this PhD seeks to answer, aiming to inspire modern recorder players to adopt a more culturally informed approach to performing this music.
