Barbara Wiernik
Phd student in the Arts

At 18, Barbara Wiernik (1974) joined the Jazz Studio in Antwerp. She decided two years later to follow her teacher David Linx at the Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel (KCB) where 5 years later she graduated with distinction.
She went to India in 1999 to follow her first training in traditional Hindustani and Carnatic singing, which gives a particular character to her different repertoires.

In 2000, after 7 years of intense collaboration with the pianist Jozef Dumoulin, she released her first duet album. Then came different projects and albums as leader or co-leader : "Soul of Butterflies" in which we hear mainly her compositions and lyrics, "PiWiZ" around Pirly Zurstrassen's  compositions, "WRaP!" around the music of Alain Pierre, with whom she has closely been collaborating for several years.
In addition to the projects in which she is the "Sidewoman'', she released in 2016 her album "Complicity" with Nicola Andrioli, the Italian pianist. It was a great success. "Ellipse" her latest project, accompanied by wonderful musicians, will soon be released.

Barbara never stops training (Estill Voice Training, Circle Songs, Carnatic singing and rhythms, Darmon Meader & Rosana Eckert’s jazz singing classes, Katja Maria Slotte Complete Vocal Coaching...) as learning and transmitting all that revolves around the voice, inspires her more than ever. She has been teaching for about fifteen years at the Antwerp Conservatory and gives jazz singing and vocal improvisation workshops in Brussels and all over the world. In addition, in 2020 she has been hired at the KCB-EhB as research assistant for a doctoral thesis on current European jazz singers, a subject that closely concerns and fascinates her.
