Stefaan Verdegem is an oboist, researcher and chamber music teacher at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (Belgium – Europe). Being an all-round musician, he combined for several years an active freelance career playing the baroque oboe with a job as English horn soloist in the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra (today: Antwerp Symphony Orchestra). With this orchestra he toured throughout Europe, and made many recordings. For the last 20 years he has focussed mainly on historical instruments. He is a regular member of B’Rock orchestra, Il Gardellino, Anima Eterna, Concerto Köln and Les Talens Lyriques. With these ensembles he has performed on the five continents, and has made many recordings for the Harmonia Mundi, Ricercar, Zig-Zag Territoires, Accent and Passacaille labels. Being a specialist of the nineteenth century English horn, Stefaan Verdegem performed and recorded a great deal of its orchestral repertoire on period instruments, ranging from Rossini to Poulenc. At the same time he lectures regularly about the nineteenth-century oboe, and publishes in The Galpin Society Journal (UK), The Double Reed (USA) and Rohrblatt (D). In 2011 and 2018 he was awarded the "Darche" prize for his research activities.
